The Right Turkey Vest

© By Othmar Vohringer

Somebody asked me the other day, “What is the right turkey vest to buy?” Turkey vests come in different models and the best way I know to choose one is by considering your personal needs. Are you a minimalist or do you like to carry as many different calls and gadgets as possible in the woods? Answering this question for yourself will be the deciding factor how many pockets your vest should have.

A good vest should have several itemized pockets to conveniently store and retrieve calls and other things you need. A good organized turkey vest will be essential to your success and comfort, there is nothing worse then having to fumble around in the pockets when you quickly need to change calls in a critical moment when the tom is closing in fast.

Caught Of Guard With Your Gun Down? Here’s What You Can Do

© By Othmar Vohringer

It often happens that a tom comes running to our calls and we’re not ready to shoot. Don’t panic. All is not lost. Fortunately turkeys don’t see slow and gradual movement. There have been a few times that I had to bring my gun up or draw my bow on a gobbler with them looking right at me, but the emphasis is on slow and steady movement.

If you lucky the tom is strutting or walking behind a tree. If either of these scenarios occurs wait until the tree or the fan blocks his vision of you and then raise the gun or draw the bow quickly. Get ready to kill the tom the moment he provides you with a shooting opportunity.

Hunting Turkeys In Bad Weather

© By Othmar Vohringer

A turkey hunter who insists on waiting for the perfect weather won’t hunt much. Spring weather is notorious for changing conditions. Rain, snow, freezing departures, thick fog and blistering heat are all possible during a single spring season. Often the weather conditions will change within a single day.

The best advice is to hunt whenever you can and adjust your hunting tactics to conditions. Hunters who brave the unpleasant weather conditions often can increase their success rate because the competition stays home. This alone can be a great advantage for those of us who hunt on public accessible land. Turkeys, the survivalists they are, have learned at what times hunters crowd the woods and fields and under what conditions they stay home.
